Last month, a homeowner in Wilmette typed into ChatGPT: 'What's the best masonry contractor for chimney restoration on the North Shore of Chicago?' ChatGPT named three businesses. None of them paid for that mention. All three had something in common: they had structured, authoritative content on their websites that answered exactly that question.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is what happens when you optimize your content not for Google's ranking algorithm but for AI models' retrieval and citation logic. The two are related but not identical.

How AI models decide who to recommend: LLMs like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini pull from training data and, increasingly, live web retrieval. They cite businesses that appear in high-authority local directories, have consistent NAP data across the web, are mentioned in editorial content (blog posts, local news), and answer specific local intent questions in their own website content.

What to add to your website to become AI-recommendable: A dedicated FAQ page answering the exact questions homeowners ask AI assistants. 'Who is the best chimney sweep in Evanston?' 'How much does tuckpointing cost in Chicago?' 'What should I look for in a Chicagoland remodeling contractor?' These feel strange to write but they are the exact queries being routed to AI.

Structured data markup (Schema.org) is non-negotiable. LocalBusiness, Service, and FAQPage schema tell AI crawlers exactly what your business does, where you serve, and what questions you answer. We add this to every PaylabOS website on day one.
